| Описание | Panoramic view of the northwestern capes of the Olkhon Island coast: Damnuriy, Khara-Under, Khoboy, seen from the cliffs of Cape Sagan-Khushun. Complex tectonics and metamorphism make it difficult to understand the origin of the oldest formations. In geology, the study of Lake Baikal has been accompanied by ongoing discussion over the past hundred years. At the northwestern end of Olkhon Island there are outcrops of schists, gneisses, light marbles and quartzites of the Archean and Proterozoic up to 3 billion (3000 million) years old. These rocks are considerably older than Lake Baikal itself and the continental rift (fault) in which it was formed. In many places these rocks are covered with red and brown lichens.
